A day-after wedding session is exactly what it sounds like. You put the dress and the suit back on the day after your wedding, and we go make portraits with no timeline, no guests, and no clock running. It is the single best thing a couple can add to their photography, and for most of mine, it produces the images they end up loving most. Here is what it is, why it works, and how it quietly fixes the hardest part of the wedding day.
What a day-after session actually is
The wedding day is a beautiful blur. You are pulled in fifty directions, the schedule is tight, and portrait time is always the first thing that gets cut when the toasts run long. A day-after session takes those portraits out of the chaos entirely. We pick a location, we go at the best light of the day, and we make unhurried images of just the two of you. No receiving line. No DJ. No timeline.
It goes by a few names. Some photographers call it a day-after shoot, a post-wedding session, or an after session. Whatever you call it, the idea is the same: real time, real attention, and the two of you in your wedding attire one more time.

Why it produces calmer, better portraits
Here is the honest truth about wedding-day portraits. You are exhausted, you are emotional, and you are aware that a hundred people are waiting on you. That tension shows up in the photos, even when they are gorgeous. The day after, all of that is gone. The big day already happened. There is nothing left to be nervous about. You are loose, you are present, and it shows.
A day-after session also frees up the location. On the wedding day you are tied to the venue. The day after, we can go anywhere. The lakefront at Edgewater, the gardens in University Circle, the Flats with the skyline behind you. We chase the light instead of fighting the schedule.
How it takes pressure off your wedding day
This is the part planners do not talk about enough. When you know you have a day-after session on the calendar, your wedding-day timeline stops being a battle. You do not have to choose between a long cocktail hour and good portraits. You do not have to skip golden hour because dinner is being served. The relaxed couple's portraits move to the next day, and the wedding day opens up.
I cover exactly how this works in the wedding photography timeline guide. The short version: a day-after session is a pressure valve. It lets you be a guest at your own wedding.
The best wedding photos are not always taken at the wedding. They are taken the morning after, when the only thing on the schedule is each other.
Best Cleveland locations for a day-after session
Cleveland is built for this. My go-to spots change with the couple and the season, but these never miss:
- Edgewater Beach. West-facing, open water, the best sunset in the city.
- University Circle. The museum grounds, Wade Lagoon, and the gardens in one walk.
- The Flats and Ohio City. Skyline, murals, and the river for an urban edge.
- Squire's Castle and the Metroparks. Stone and forest for a quiet, nature-forward feel.
I break the full list down, with the best time of day for each, in the Cleveland engagement photo locations guide. Most of those spots double perfectly for a day-after session.
What to wear (yes, the dress again) and how to plan logistics
Wear the dress and the suit. That is the whole point. A few couples worry about the gown after one wear, but a day-after session is gentle on it, and most are thrilled to put it on one more time before it goes in the box forever. Bring whatever made you feel like yourself on the wedding day: the veil, the shoes, the jacket.
Logistics are simple. We book the session for the morning or evening after the wedding, usually an hour at the best light. You do not need hair and makeup redone to a wedding-day finish. A relaxed version of your wedding look is perfect, and it suits the calmer mood of the photos.
When it makes sense and when it doesn't
A day-after session is right for you if you want unhurried portraits, if your wedding-day timeline is tight, or if there is a location you love that does not fit on the wedding day. It is right for almost everyone, honestly.
It is not the move if you are leaving for your honeymoon at dawn, or if you genuinely do not want to wear the attire again. That is the only real catch. If you are out of town the next morning, we can sometimes do a sunrise version before you fly. If not, it is one of the few add-ons I will tell you to skip.
How a day-after session works with my packages
I build the day-after session into my higher collections, and I offer it as an add-on for everyone else. It is one of the most-requested things I do, and it is a big part of why the brand is called what it is. You can see the dedicated day-after page for the full story, review how it fits each collection on the investment page, and browse the editorial style across the wedding portfolio. When you are ready, tell me about your day and we will plan the session that gives you the photos you will actually hang on the wall.
Day-after session pricing varies by collection and add-on structure. Contact me for current pricing.
